2026 Writers in Crisis Grant
The Writers in Crisis Grant was created to support writers in areas of crisis. SFWA offers these grants as a way to support writers affected by war, conflict, famine, and violence.
SFWA has seeded $10,000 for a Writers in Crisis relief fund effort to help SFWA members who have been financially affected by crises, whether that is from displacement, violence, disability, death, loss of home, income, or economic stability. This list is not limiting. If you think you may be eligible, please apply.
This receipt-based, reimbursement grant for individuals allows each applicant to apply for up to $500 of emergency funding to cover essential needs, such as housing and food, due to lost income due to war, conflict, famine, and violence.
Applicants are limited to one application per year. All requests and payments will be held in strict confidence.
Writers in Crisis Grant reimbursement is available to professional genre writers. Grants will continue as funds are available.
Please note that this grant is only for individual writers affected by crises, not for small businesses or organizations.
For unexpected emergency medical expenses beyond paying your monthly premium for coverage, please apply to the Emergency Medical Fund.
If you would like to contribute to this effort, donate to SFWA’s Writers in Crisis Grant Fund. Given the number of people affected by crises across the globe, our initial fund will be only a drop in the bucket.
The Writers in Crisis Fund is administered by the SFWA Chief Financial Officer (CFO), who will make disbursements as directed by the Writers in Crisis Grant Review Committee and approved by the Grant Allocations Committee. Writers in Crisis Grant Review Committee members are appointed by the President, with the consent of the Board, and operate with complete independence.
To apply for assistance, please fill out the form below to begin the process. Additional information may be requested by the Writers in Crisis Grant Committee. All individuals who receive funds should be aware these grants are considered taxable income.
Payment Information
PayPal is SFWA’s preferred payment option and the fastest option to get approved applicants their funding. Please note that all payments for members located outside the U.S. must be made via PayPal.
At this time, SFWA can only provide payment by 1). ground-mail check to US addresses, 2). ACH deposit to a secure bank account using the US banking system, or 3). PayPal. Authors will incur transaction fees under PayPal’s current terms of service.
PayPal is required for international payments. International authors may need to make arrangements to ensure they can receive payment in one of the above forms. If in doubt about viable payment options, please query us at office@sfwa.org.
Applications will be processed on a rolling, first come, first-served basis.
Other opportunities for applicants:
- SFWA will continue to provide Emergency Medical Fund and Legal Fund support to all qualifying authors, including those impacted authors in conflict zones.
- SFWA will provide free Virtual Nebula access for any author impacted by war or conflict.
- SFWA will waive membership fees for authors living in or displaced from areas impacted by war or conflict.
Thank you for reaching out in this difficult time. Please keep seeking support wherever grant and other community outreach opportunities arise – and keep writing.
