Welcome to the New SFWA Events!

For years, SFWA staged out events on events.sfwa.org, but we’re bringing our events “home” to SFWA.org for an important reason: better integration.

Instead of two separate login systems, we have one – with seamless event-access for all future ticket purchases from store.sfwa.org. And instead of having events “stuck” on just one page, we now have an interface that allows us to promote the work of our volunteers and their presenters all across the website. This means that committee and project teams will have upcoming events front and center on their main pages, right next to deep dives into relevant creative topics.

You will also note that SFWA now finally shows local time for events on most displays. (Hello, 21st Century!) If you have a VPN turned on, your experience may vary, but we hope this improves your Nebula conference this year, and all other events via SFWA.org.

Thank you for growing with us! It’s been a wild ride, and your support through these technical transformations has meant the world to our team. Check back soon for news about a proper Open House to provide more insight into this and other recent changes here on SFWA.org.

How do LLMs work? What do they do, what do they do badly, and what are their real risks and harms?

"AI" is everywhere these days, both in familiar software and in the discourse. In a lot of quarters, you'll hear claims that it will inevitably take over all jobs, that it will be able to do everything, and that those who don't use it will swiftly fall behind. Many creators want to resist these trends, or play with new tools at their own pace, but face pressure from employers and trouble navigating opt-out settings.

The SFWA Emerging Technology panel offers a hype-free discussion of how large language models work, and debunks some common areas of confusion. We'll talk about what they're good at, what they're likely to remain bad at, where they harm creators, and the risks involved with using them. And we'll talk about the difference between chatbots and non-generative AI methods. Our goal is to help attendees make mindful decisions about what role (if any) you want AI to play in your work, enforce those boundaries with employers and in software settings, and have something coherent to say to friends who "just asked ChatGPT."

At the half hour, our feature will be introduced and read for twenty minutes. This will be recorded and available on the events page to view. Bring a poem or two to read, hear our featured poet, and hang out afterwards.
