Amir Agoora (he/him) is an only-in-NYC bodega blend of half Yemeni, half Puerto Rican. In 2023, during the Writers Guild of America strike, Amir got the chance to focus on his own fiction. He wrote a speculative fiction short story which went on to win the Writers of the Future Award and used to join Clarion Workshop in the same year. At both workshops, Amir was told to join SFWA, which he promptly did.
Why SFWA Committee:
“Being involved in the WGA and working in writers’ rooms taught me that the best way to grow is by engaging with other professionals and being part of a community. I joined SFWA’s Comics Committee because of a lifelong love of comics and a hope to transition my animation writing on other people’s IP into developing my own projects. Other than one comics appearance in The New Yorker, I have no experience in comics. However, learning from guest chats and other SFWA Committee Members has been incredibly helpful in understanding the medium and ways to engage.”
Goals for the year ahead? Personally, I’m on my cooking arc and have been perfecting at-home hot pot and an immaculate iced coffee.
Professionally, once I finish the current game writing I’m on, I’d like to take some time to pitch some of my own work. I’ve been exploring manga and any manga artists are welcome to reach out :)

A. A. Rubin (he/him) roams the variegated planes of the multiverse like a cosmic Cain. He writes everything from poetry to comics, literary fiction to science fiction and fantasy, and (almost) everything in between. He joined the comics committee after meeting Jessica Maison, the committee’s chair, while paneling on the comics panel she moderated at the 2024 Nebula Conference. Over the last two years, he has worked to bring in guests for the monthly comics chats, ranging from professional comics writers, to working editors, and legal experts.
“As a writer in multiple mediums, I can see the differences—both positive and negative—between the various professional communities of which I am a part. I think SFWA has a real opportunity to become a standard bearer for professional expectations and certification in the comics space like it has been in the prose space as long as I can remember. The new comics writing Nebula is important first step, but I hope that, as it works to gain a higher profile within the comics community, it can become a meaningful certification of professional status and behavior in the comics space on both the writers’ and the industry’s side.”
Goals for the year ahead? Personally, I’m querying a prose novel, and pitching a number of comics projects. From SFWA perspective, I hope the committee works to connect the organization with the major comics conventions so that SFWA can both be recognized as a meaningful professional credential when members apply for badges and space, and have a presence at comic cons in the form of a SFWA table and panels.
