The world of comics and graphic novels contains a rich landscape of work in the realm of science fiction, fantasy, and related genres. For many years, SFWA did not have many opportunities to celebrate this work, though, because the organization’s top priority is advocacy - but as an association of writers, not a formal union.
Lately, though, the terrific rise in small-press and indie-published works has provided more overlap in actionable concerns, and our dynamic Comics Committee arose brimming with brilliant ideas, including the launch of our first-ever Nebula award for comics, which will next year be called “Comics Writing” in alignment with our Game Writing award.
Our first-ever award for “Comic” went this year to Jessica Maison, writer of Mary Shelley’s School for Monsters: The Killing Stone. This is book two in a supernatural version of Mary Shelley, illustrated by Anna Wieszckyk with lettering by Matt Krotzer.
In this second outing, Shel and her monster-rescuing crew have to deal with the consequence of previous actions. It’s not just the rage of a nine-tailed kitsune they have to tackle, after it was released from the Killing Stone; Shel also has to tackle her own pain and anger. Grudges big and small could spell disaster for the team otherwise.
