Jack Cady (1932-2004) turned to writing after careers as a truck driver, warehouse worker, and landscaper. Although Cady filed as a conscientious objector during the Korean War, he did serve in the Coast Guard. Beginning in 1968, he taught creative writing at several universities in Washington, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Alaska, eventually returning to Washington. He won the Nebula, Stoker, SF Chronicle, and HOMer Award for his story “The Night We Buried Road Dog” and the World Fantasy Award for his collection The Sons of Noah and Other Stories. In 1992, Cady received a $20,000 creative writing fellowship from the NEA.
