Baltimore Science Fiction Society Hosts Writing Workshops
The Baltimore Science Fiction Society has issued the following news:
The Baltimore Science Fiction Society (BSFS) is proud to announce the beginning of a series of day long writing workshops run by active and acclaimed professional writers in the genre of science fiction and fantasy. The first will be on Saturday, August 25th at 10 AM at BSFS headquarters at 3310 East Baltimore Street in Baltimore, Maryland, and will be taught by Brenda Clough. The second will be on Saturday, January 26th, at 10 AM at BSFS headquarters and will be lead by Jonathan Maberry. The third is to be determined. The cost to each participant is $25 per person, with lunch included, and attendance is limited to fifteen people per workshop–payment is due two weeks before the day of the workshop. The workshops are self-supporting and do not generate profit. Please contact BSFSEvents@BSFS.Org for more information, including how to submit payment.
The mission of BSFS is to promote the reading, writing and publication of literary science fiction and fantasy. To that end, we offer book discussion groups, author lectures, writers’ critique circles, and now every three to four months we will be hosting a workshop dedicated to improving the writing techniques of participants. The topics covered will include openings and endings, plot and tension, character development, writing dialogue, the novel vs the short story, and other vital aspects of writing.
Brenda Clough has had many short stories, novels, and non-fiction work published throughout the years, and was nominated for both the Hugo and Nebula awards for her 2002 novella, “May Be Some Time.” Along with being a guest at numerous conventions, she has been active in local Maryland/DC fandom for years, has experience teaching science fiction writing, and is currently an instructor at the famed Writers Center in Bethesda, MD. Jonathan Maberry is a prolific writer who has experience in many genres. The New York Times Bestseller and Bram Stoker Award winner has published novels and short stories which fall into the categories of science fiction, mystery, and horror, along with his work in such prime Marvel Comics as Black Panther, Captain America, and Wolverine.
