Nisi Shawl and Cynthia Ward will present "A Taste of Writing the Other" on March 3, 2006, 7:00 p.m., at the main location of the University Book Store in Seattle. This special mini-workshop is offered in conjunction with the publication of their new book Writing the Other: A Practical Approach. Based on the acclaimed full, four-hour "Writing the Other" workshop, this concise, readable book includes essays and exercises that help authors create believable characters with diverse backgrounds. Race, religion, and age are among the differences covered in the book's hands-on approach.
Both established professional writers and talented beginners have benefited
from attending "Writing the Other" workshops. Now, for
one evening only, selected workshop techniques
and concepts are accessible to the public at no charge. Those unable to
attend can still purchase Writing the Other: A Practical Approach. (ISBN
1-933500-00-X) from the University Bookstore, or online at Aqueduct Press.
Nisi Shawl's stories have appeared in Asimov's SF Magazine, Strange Horizons, and the groundbreaking Dark Matter anthology series. A guest lecturer at Stanford University and a frequent contributor to The Seattle Times, she's the Clarion West Writers Workshop Diversity/Outreach Coordinator and co-founder of the Carl Brandon Society, a group focusing on people of color in speculative and fantastic fiction.
