Carol Hightshoe, editor of The Lorelei Signal, is pleased to announce that "Debtor" by J.Michael Matuszewicz has been selected by storySouth as one of the "100 Notable Stories for 2006."

All styles and genres are considered in the selection of the best online short stories as part of the Million Writers Award. Although some of the authors' names are recognizable, such as the singer Janis Ian, the only standard for nomination is excellence in writing.

Matuszewicz's story "Debtor" appeared in the July 2006 edition of The Lorelei Signal, which focuses on strong female characters in speculative fiction and poetry. The e-zine is respected in the science fiction and fantasy fields, having finished in the top ten Fiction Publications in the 2006 Preditors and Editors Poll. The story was also included in A Time To..., an anthology of the magazine's best stories.

The story is a fantasy about an old man and a young girl who comes to his farm and offers to work for food. A series of accidents makes it impossible for her to repay his kindness, and a far older debt hangs over both of them. Only when she ends up owing him her life does he find a way to settle things to everyone's satisfaction.
