Don Dailey (1949-2007)

Don Dailey at Archon in 2004 Donald H. Dailey passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007 at his home in Georgetown, Indiana, concluding a long battle with cancer.

Born March 26, 1949 in Sommerville, Massachusetts, Don grew up in Clayton, New Mexico. He joined the Army in 1968 at age 18 and was sent to Vietnam for 14 months. After returning to the US, Don was stationed at Fort Richardson in Alaska. While stationed at the Presidio of Monterey, CA, Don met Janet Johnson and they were married on May 25, 1974. They were stationed in Germany for three years before being transferred to Fort Ben Harrison in Indianapolis, Indiana where they lived for 14 years. Don retired in 1988, becoming a stay-at-home parent for their two daughters. In 1995 the Daileys moved to Georgetown, Indiana. He worked for the U.S. Census Bureau and as a teacher for the Marion, Floyd and Harrison County school systems.

A lifelong science fiction reader and collector, until recently Daily was the Newsletter Editor and Membership Chairman for First Fandom, giving up the post only when his deteriorating health stopped him from continuing to perform his duties. He was also active in Starfleet Command, an international Star Trek fan club, where he was elected Chief of Staff and later Commander-in-Chief.

He is survived by Janet, his wife of 33 years; three sisters; and two daughters.

A memorial service will be held at 10AM Saturday, May 26th, at the Gehlbach and Royse Funeral Home, on Indiana Highway 64, in Georgetown, Indiana. A second memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 2nd at 1PM at Little and Sons Funeral Home, 4901 E. Stop 11 Road, Indianapolis, Indiana.

The family requests that memorials be made, in lieu of flowers, to Hospice & Palliative Care of Southern Indiana, 624 E Market St, New Albany, Indiana 47150, the American Cancer Society or the Brown Cancer Center, Louisville, KY.
