David Gemmell (1948-2006)

British fantasy writer David Gemmell died Friday, July 28, 2006, two weeks after having heart bypass surgery. He was 57.

Born in London in 1948, Gemmell's first writing work was as as a freelancer for the London, Daily Mail Daily Mirror and Daily Express. His first novel, Legend was published in 1984. It was a major success and has remained in print until this day.

He began writing fiction full time in 1986 and his 30th novel, Troy: the Shield of Thunder is scheduled for UK release in September. His best known novel was Waylander, set in the same world as Legend. He is survived by his wife Stella and two children.
