James Doohan (1920-2005)

The AP is reporting that James Doohan died of pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease at 5:30AM Wednesday, July 20 at his Redmond, Washington home.

Born James Montgomery Doohan on March 3, 1920, in Vancouver, British Columbia, he was a D-Day veteran who lost a portion of one finger in the Normandy invasion.

Although he had a long acting career, he will always be known for one role, Scotty on the Star Trek TV series and movies. He became so well known for the role that his acting career was limited following the series, but he was able to make a career of personal appearances Star Trek conventions and related events.

Doohan is credited with creating Vulcan and Klingon words used in Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Klingon has since been expanded into a complete language.

With S.M. Stirling he co-authored three science fiction novels published by Baen, all in the "Flight Engineer" series:

    The Rising
    The Privateer
    The Independent Command
