William Hanna (1910-2001)

William Hanna, who partnered with Joseph Barbera to create animated television classics such as The Jetsons, Atom Ant, Jonny Quest, The Flintstones and Tom and Jerry died Thursday, March 22 at his home in North Hollywood. He was 90 years old.

Hanna and Barbera met while working at MGM in 1937 and broke new ground by mixing animation and live action. In 1957, they founded Hanna-Barbera Studios when MGM closed its cartoon division. They went on to produce more than 3,000 half-hour shows, won seven Oscars, received a star on the Hollywood walk of fame in 1976 and were inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame in 1993.

Hanna is survived by wife 65 years, Violet, two children, seven grandchildren and his partner Joseph Barbera, age 89.
